Phone Speaker Cleaner
Turn volume up, hold the phone speaker-down and press Start.
Set volume to max, speaker facing down.
Volume: media volume to max, silent mode off, Bluetooth disconnected.
Not a repair; stop if the phone feels hot or sound gets worse.
Run complete
This tool can't measure if water came out. Your ears can.
How does your speaker sound now?
Great. Let it dry 5 minutes.
Run Deep mode again (flip the phone), or try Both speakers. Raise intensity in settings.
Stop now. Power off the phone, let it dry 30+ minutes face down. See a repair shop if it persists.
- Play music or a voice note
- Compare call volume
- Listen for crackle or buzz
- Wait 5 min and test again
Your phone has two speakers. Clean the right one
| Speaker | Where it is | What it does | Hold the phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom speaker (loudspeaker) | Grille on the bottom edge, next to the charging port | Ringtones, videos, music, speakerphone | Bottom edge down |
| Earpiece (call speaker) | Slot at the top of the screen | Calls held to your ear; on stereo phones also media | Top edge down |
If music and videos sound muffled, start with Bottom. If callers sound faint but videos are fine, it is the Earpiece. Not sure, or the phone went in the pool? Use Both: the cleaner runs the bottom speaker first, beeps and vibrates when it is time to flip the phone, then cleans the earpiece.
How to clean a phone speaker in four steps
1
Prepare the phone
Take off the case, wipe the phone dry and disconnect Bluetooth earphones or speakers, so the sound plays from the phone itself.
2
Turn up the right volume
On iPhone switch off Silent mode and use the side buttons. On Android raise the media volume, not the ring volume.
3
Point the speaker down
Bottom edge down for the loudspeaker, top edge down for the earpiece. Gravity helps the drops fall out.
4
Run, wipe, repeat
Press Start, let the run finish, wipe the grille and run again if it is still muffled. Then leave the phone to air-dry for an hour.
A cleaning mode for every phone speaker
Bottom
Pulsed 165 Hz tone, the low pitch that moves a phone loudspeaker the furthest. Switch to Steady or Sweep, or set 100 to 300 Hz, in Advanced.
Earpiece
A gentle 300 to 1,000 Hz sweep at a lower level. The earpiece is a much smaller speaker that cannot move much at very low pitches.
Both
Bottom speaker, then a flip prompt with a beep and a vibration, then the earpiece, all in one run.
Earbuds
Short, quiet 220 Hz pulses for earbuds lying on a table, with intensity capped at 40%.
iPhone and Android tips
iPhone: Silent mode
Web pages can be muted by Silent mode. Switch it off with the side switch or the Action button. This page also asks Safari to play through the speaker where supported.
iPhone: no built-in water eject
IPhones have no water eject button. The Water Eject shortcut people share just plays a tone, which this page does without installing anything. See our iPhone speaker cleaner.
Android: media volume
Press a volume button, then expand the slider panel and raise Media. Ring volume does not affect this page.
Android: Vibrate
Turn on Vibrate for an extra shake and a haptic flip cue. See our Android speaker cleaner.
"Moisture detected" warnings are about the charging port, not the speaker. A tone does not dry the port: unplug and let it air-dry.
Earpiece and earbuds: what works
Earpiece on stereo phones
IPhone 7 and later and most mid-range and flagship Androids use the earpiece as the second speaker for media, so the earpiece sweep reaches it.
Earpiece on other phones
Some phones use the earpiece only during calls, and no web page can play sound through it. Brush the slot gently instead. Our earpiece speaker cleaner page explains how.
AirPods and earbuds
Apple's advice for wet AirPods is to wipe them, gently shake out the water and let them dry. Earwax, the usual cause of muffled earbuds, needs a soft brush, not a tone. Our AirPods and earbuds cleaner page covers both.
Phone speaker safety
Moderate volume, short runs
Runs last 15 to 60 seconds and stop by themselves. After three runs in a row, Start waits 30 seconds.
Stop if it rattles, buzzes or gets warm
Never with earbuds in your ears
Earbuds mode is for buds lying on a table.
Salt water, soda and chlorine
Rinse and dry as the maker advises first. Sugar and salt do not shake out.
Do not charge a wet phone, and skip the rice: it does not dry phones faster than open air.
Phone speaker cleaner FAQ
How do I clean my phone speaker with sound?
Take off the case, disconnect Bluetooth, turn the media volume up and hold the phone with the speaker facing down. Press Start and let the 30-second run finish, then wipe the grille. Repeat two or three times if it is still muffled.
Which phone speaker should I clean?
If videos and music sound muffled, clean the bottom speaker. If callers sound faint but media is fine, clean the earpiece. After a swim or a drop in water, choose Both to clean them in one guided run.
Does the phone speaker cleaner work on iPhone?
Yes, in Safari or Chrome on any iPhone. Switch off Silent mode and disconnect AirPods so the sound comes from the phone. iPhone 7 and later also play media through the earpiece, so the earpiece mode reaches it.
Does it work on Samsung and other Android phones?
Yes, in Chrome, Samsung Internet or Firefox on any Android phone. Raise the media volume, not the ring volume. On phones that support it, Vibrate adds an extra shake and a haptic flip cue.
Can I clean the earpiece with sound?
On phones with stereo speakers, yes: the earpiece plays media and the gentle sweep can shake out water. On phones whose earpiece only works in calls, a web page cannot reach it. Brush the slot with a soft, dry brush instead.
Can I eject water from AirPods with this?
Not reliably. Apple advises wiping wet AirPods, gently shaking them and letting them dry. Earbuds mode plays short, quiet pulses for buds lying on a table, which may help with drops on the mesh. Never use it with earbuds in your ears.
How long until my phone speaker sounds normal?
Usually right after one to three runs plus an hour of air-drying. If it is still muffled after a day, the grille may be blocked with dust or the speaker may be damaged.
Is it safe for my phone?
Yes at a sensible volume. The tones are within what any phone speaker is built to play. Keep runs short, start at the default intensity and stop if the speaker rattles.
Pick Bottom, Earpiece, Both or Earbuds, follow the three checks and press Start. Two minutes, no app, no sign-up.
