How to clean a phone earpiece

1

Check the screen protector

A protector or case lip covering the earpiece slot is a common cause of quiet calls. Make sure the slot is open.

2

Brush the slot

Brush side to side with a soft, dry toothbrush to lift skin oil, makeup and dust. Then press a piece of low-tack tape or cleaning putty on it and peel it off.

3

Play the sweep

Hold the phone top edge down and press Start. The 300 to 1,000 Hz sweep at a lower level suits the small call speaker.

4

Test with a call

Call voicemail and raise the call volume during the call. Call volume is separate from media volume.

Will the sound reach my earpiece?

Yes on stereo phones

IPhone 7 and later, most Pixel phones, most Samsung Galaxy S and many mid-range Androids use the earpiece as the top speaker for media.

No on earpiece-only phones

Some budget phones use the earpiece only during calls. A web page cannot send sound to it, so brushing does the work.

How to tell

Play the test sound in Advanced and hold your ear to the top of the phone. If you hear it there, the sweep reaches the earpiece.

Earpiece cleaner FAQ

Why are my calls quiet but videos sound fine?

Calls use the earpiece, videos mostly use the bottom speaker. A blocked earpiece slot or a screen protector over it makes callers sound faint while media stays normal.

Can sound clean an earpiece?

It can help shake out water on phones where the earpiece plays media. Skin oil and earwax need a soft brush or putty, so clean the slot first.

Why is the earpiece sweep higher than the bottom speaker tone?

The earpiece is a tiny speaker that barely moves at very low pitches. A 300 to 1,000 Hz sweep is where it vibrates most, and the level is lower to protect it.

More phone speakers to clean? The phone speaker cleaner handles the bottom speaker, the earpiece or both in one guided run.
