How to eject water from an iPhone speaker
1
Dry and unplug
Take off the case, wipe the iPhone with a lint-free cloth and do not charge it while it is wet.
2
Sound on
Switch off Silent mode (side switch or Action button), disconnect AirPods, and turn the volume up with the side buttons.
3
Bottom edge down
Choose Bottom and press Start. You may see tiny drops at the grille: wipe them away.
4
Then the earpiece
IPhone 7 and later play media through the earpiece too. Choose Earpiece, or Both for one guided run, and hold the top edge down.
5
Air-dry
Leave the iPhone upright in a dry room for an hour before you judge the sound.
iPhone tips that make it work
Silent mode mutes web audio on many iOS versions. If you hear nothing, check the switch first.
"Liquid detected in Lightning or USB-C connector" is about the charging port, not the speaker. Unplug and let the port dry. A tone does not help the port.
No built-in water eject
Only Apple Watch has Water Lock. The Water Eject shortcut for iPhone simply plays a tone. This page does the same, with a timer, a guided earpiece step and a safety rest, and nothing to install.
Add to Home Screen in Safari's Share menu if you want one-tap access next time.
Water resistance is not waterproof
IPhone 7 and later are rated IP67 or IP68, but Apple's warranty does not cover liquid damage, and seals weaken with age.
iPhone speaker cleaner FAQ
Does the iPhone have a water eject feature?
No. Water Lock with its water-clearing tones is an Apple Watch feature. On iPhone, a sound cycle like this one or the Water Eject shortcut plays a low tone that helps push droplets out of the speaker grille.
Why can't I hear the cleaning sound on my iPhone?
Switch off Silent mode, disconnect AirPods or other Bluetooth audio, and turn the volume up with the side buttons. Then press Start again.
Does it clean the iPhone earpiece?
On iPhone 7 and later, yes: the earpiece doubles as the top speaker for media, so the Earpiece mode reaches it. Hold the phone top edge down.
Is the iPhone speaker cleaner safe?
Yes at moderate volume. Runs stop by themselves, and after three runs in a row the cleaner pauses for 30 seconds. Stop if the speaker rattles.
More phone speakers to clean? The phone speaker cleaner handles the bottom speaker, the earpiece or both in one guided run.
