AirPods Sound Muffled? Causes and Safe Fixes
Muffled AirPods are one of the most common earbud complaints. The good news: the cause is usually simple and the fix is free. The bad news: “water eject” tricks that work on phones do little for earbuds. Here is what actually helps.
Cause 1: Earwax on the mesh (most common)
Every time you wear earbuds, a little earwax and skin oil end up on the speaker mesh. Over weeks it builds into a film that blocks the sound, often in one bud more than the other.
Fix:
- Brush the mesh gently with a soft, dry, clean toothbrush, with the mesh facing down so debris falls out.
- For stubborn wax, Apple suggests specific methods for some models (including micellar water and distilled water applied in a controlled way for AirPods 4 and later). Follow Apple’s support article for your exact model.
- Never use sharp objects, and do not push wax into the mesh.
- Let the buds dry fully before putting them back in the case.
Cause 2: Water or sweat
After rain, a workout or an accidental wash, water on the mesh muffles the sound.
Fix: wipe the buds with a soft, lint-free cloth, gently shake them mesh-down, and leave them out of the case to dry for at least two hours. That is Apple’s own advice. If you want to try sound, use the earbuds mode of our AirPods and earbuds cleaner: the buds lie on a table, mesh down, and it plays 15 seconds of quiet 220 Hz pulses. Never play it with the buds in your ears.
Cause 3: Ear tip fit (AirPods Pro and in-ear buds)
A loose seal leaks bass, so the sound becomes thin and quiet. Try a different tip size. On iPhone, the Ear Tip Fit Test in the AirPods settings tells you whether the seal is good. Replace worn or stretched tips.
Cause 4: Settings
- Balance: on iPhone go to Settings, Accessibility, Audio and Visual, and check that Balance is centered.
- Headphone Accommodations and Conversation Awareness change how audio sounds. Turn them off to compare.
- Noise control: Transparency mode can make music sound thinner than Noise Cancellation.
- Equalizer: check the Music app’s EQ setting.
Cause 5: Connection
Reset the AirPods (hold the case button until the light flashes amber, then white) and pair them again. Update the firmware by keeping them connected to an iPhone on Wi-Fi while charging. For Android and Windows, update the earbud app if your brand has one.
When to contact Apple
If one bud stays quieter than the other after cleaning and a reset, or you hear crackling or static, the driver may be damaged. AirPods covered by AppleCare+ can be replaced for a service fee. Other brands have similar warranty options.
What not to do
- No alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or liquids directly on the mesh, unless the maker’s own instructions say so for your model.
- No cleaning sounds or loud tones with the buds in your ears.
- No compressed air into the mesh.
- No charging until the buds and case are fully dry.
