Moisture Detected on Samsung: Charging Port vs Speaker

Samsung Galaxy phones show a water drop icon and the message “Moisture has been detected” when the charging port is wet. Many people assume the warning is about the speaker, especially when the sound is muffled at the same time. They are two different problems with two different fixes.

What the warning means

The warning comes from the USB-C charging port. The phone senses moisture between the port contacts and blocks wired charging to prevent corrosion and short circuits. It has nothing to do with the speaker, and playing a sound will not make it go away.

How to dry the charging port

  1. Unplug the cable and do not try to force charging.
  2. Wipe the phone and the area around the port with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  3. Hold the phone port-down and tap it gently against your palm to let water out.
  4. Leave it in a dry, ventilated place. The warning usually clears within an hour or two, sometimes longer in humid weather.
  5. Wireless charging still works on models that support it, if you need power in the meantime.

Do not push cotton buds, paper or metal into the port, and do not use a hair dryer on hot.

If the warning will not go away

  • Restart the phone: the sensor sometimes keeps the warning after the port is dry.
  • Check the port with a flashlight for lint or dirt, which can hold moisture. Remove it carefully with a wooden toothpick.
  • If the warning appears when the phone has not been near water, the port may be dirty or damaged. Samsung support or an authorized repair center can check it.

Now the speaker

If music, videos or ringtones sound muffled after the phone got wet, water is probably sitting in the speaker grille on the bottom edge (and possibly in the earpiece at the top).

  1. Disconnect Bluetooth earbuds.
  2. Raise the media volume: press a volume button, expand the panel and raise the Media slider.
  3. Open the Android speaker cleaner, hold the phone bottom edge down and press Start.
  4. Turn on Vibrate for an extra shake.
  5. If calls sound muffled too, choose Both: the cleaner runs the bottom speaker, buzzes when it is time to flip the phone, and then cleans the earpiece.
  6. Wipe the grille between runs and let the phone air-dry for an hour.

Galaxy water resistance

Most Galaxy S, Note, Z and upper A-series models are rated IP67 or IP68, which covers fresh water under test conditions. Samsung warns against using the phone in salt water or pool water and against high-pressure water. After any swim in the sea or a pool, rinse the phone gently with fresh water and dry it as above.
